Schenectady Municipal Housing Authority
The Schenectady Municipal Housing Authority, the first in New York State, was established in 1934. Since the first tenants moved into Schonowee Village in 1938, the Authority has grown to encompass seven conventional housing developments serving a total of 1,018 low-income families. In addition, the SMHA Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program serves the housing needs of 1,387 households throughout the City of Schenectady.

Public housing was established to provide decent and safe rental housing for eligible low-income families, the elderly, and persons with disabilities. Public housing comes in all sizes and types, from scattered single family houses to high-rise apartments for elderly families.
Section 8 Housing in New York’s Capital Region
The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program is available to very low income individuals and families. Rents are subsidized according to income rules and regulations established by the U.S. Department of Housing & Development.
Due to the large number of people on our wait list, applications are NOT being accepted at this time. When it is time to reopen the wait list for new applications, announcements will be well published through this website, local newspapers, and notice to local human service agencies.
